Blizzard Warning issued January 5 at 2:51AM CST until January 5 at 6:00PM CST by NWS Hastings NE...SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM CONTINUES TODAY, ESPECIALLY FOR SOUTHERNPARTS OF OUR AREA...* WHAT...Blizzard conditions expected at times in falling, blowing,and drifting snow. Widely varying storm total snow accumulationbetween 8 and 16 inches, overall-highest within Mitchell, Osborneand Jewell counties. Northerly winds gusting as high as 30 to 40mph.* WHERE...Smith, Jewell, Osborne and Mitchell counties in Kansas.Thayer and Nuckolls counties in Nebraska.* WHEN...Until 6 PM CST this evening.* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible at times.Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.Visibilities will likely drop below 1/4 mile at times due tofalling and blowing snow. Whiteout conditions are expected andwill make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening.* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...This has the potential to be one of theheaviest snows in at least 10 to 30 years for parts of the area,particularly in and near Mitchell County Kansas. Snow willgradually end across the area from west-to-east this afternooninto early evening. Winds will gradually weaken this evening, withgusts under 20 MPH by midnight.Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel,have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay withyour vehicle. The latest road conditions for the state you arecalling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions areexpected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong windsare likely. This will lead to whiteout conditions, making travelextremely dangerous. Do not travel. If you must travel, have awinter survival kit with you. Cold Weather Advisory issued January 5 at 3:10AM CST until January 6 at 11:00AM CST by NWS Hastings NE* WHAT...Very cold wind chills as low as -15 to -25 degrees expectedacross most of the area, including during the Monday morningcommute.* WHERE...Portions of north central Kansas and central, eastcentral, and south central Nebraska.* WHEN...From midnight tonight to 11 AM CST Monday.* IMPACTS...The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbiteon exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Frostbite andhypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to thesetemperatures.* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Although wind speeds will be rather light,mainly only 5 to 10 MPH, the combination of even light winds andvery cold air temperatures will still drive wind chills todangerous levels. Please note: Cold Weather Advisories are new asof this winter, and functionally replace previously-issued WindChill Advisories, which have been discontinued.Use caution while traveling. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, andgloves.
