Winter Storm Warning issued January 5 at 3:22AM CST until January 6 at 3:00AM CST by NWS Des Moines IA...SHARP GRADIENT OF ACCUMULATING SNOW FOR SOUTHERN IOWA TODAY ANDTHIS EVENING....A winter storm continues to near the state and will bringaccumulating snowfall to southern Iowa today through this evening.So far early this morning, there have been a few bursts of flurriesor light snow over southern Iowa and as far north as I-80 in a fewplaces, but dry air in the lower part of the atmosphere continues tolimit snowfall so far. As we continue through the day, snow shouldbe able to develop and sustain itself over far southern Iowa with thehighest snowfall amounts near the Missouri border. Winds from thenortheast and north averaging 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts willreinforce this dry air. This will cause a very sharp gradient insnowfall amounts with lower amounts in the northern part of a givencounty and higher amounts in the southern part of the same countyover far southern Iowa. Any shift in the predicted storm track willtherefore have significant impacts on forecast snowfall amounts socontinue to monitor the forecast for the latest updates. Little tono snow is expected north of I-80. Finally, the winds will cause atleast some minor blowing and drifting snow where the new snow falls.* WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Additional snow accumulations between4 and 8 inches with a tight gradient in snow amounts. Windsgusting as high as 35 mph may produce blowing and drifting snow.* WHERE...Far southern Iowa along the Iowa 2 corridor.* WHEN...Until 3 AM CST Monday.* IMPACTS...Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, willlikely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult.Any blowing snow could reduce visibilities.Persons should consider delaying all travel. If you must travel,drive with extreme caution and leave plenty of room between you andthe motorist ahead of you and allow extra time to reach yourdestination safely. Consider taking a winter storm kit along withyou, including such items as tire chains, booster cables,flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing.
