Hydrologic Outlook issued January 19 at 9:13AM CST by NWS Chicago ILESFLOTFavorable conditions for river ice development and possible ice jamsare expected through Wednesday morning, impacting theRock, Fox, Des Plaines, and Kankakee river basins.Bitterly cold temperatures will persist through Wednesday morning.This will make conditions favorable for the rapid formation of riverice on area rivers and tributaries. River ice spotters and rivergauge data indicate that most area rivers already have some areas ofheavy river ice including a few minor ice jams. New ice jams will bepossible along the Rock, Fox, Des Plaines, and Kankakee rivers,including their tributaries. Any ice jam that develops will have thepotential to cause rises on area rivers with little warning andisolated areas of flooding are possible.This outlook means that elevated water levels and potential impactsare possible, but not yet certain. Persons along area rivers shouldcontinue to monitor the latest forecasts into next week.This product will be updated by Monday afternoon.

In Indiana, Benton, Jasper, and Newton Counties.* WHEN...For the first Cold Weather Advisory, until noon CST /1 PMEST/ today. For the second Cold Weather Advisory, from 9 PM CST/10 PM EST/ this evening to noon CST /1 PM EST/ Tuesday.* IMPACTS...The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 to 25below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as30 minutes.* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Wind chills will fall to near 20 below zerothis morning. After some recovery this afternoon, another round ofdangerously cold wind chills is possible tonight into Tuesdaymorning.Wear appropriate clothing outdoors, including a hat and mittens orgloves. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make frequent checkson older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters areused correctly.

Flood Watch issued January 20 at 7:08AM CST by NWS Chicago IL...The Flood Watch continues for the following rivers in Illinois...Kankakee River at Momence affecting Kankakee County.* WHAT...Flooding is possible due to an ice jam.* WHERE...Kankakee River from IL/IN state line downstream toconfluence with Iroquois River at Aroma Park, including theMomence gauge.* WHEN...Until further notice.* IMPACTS...At 4.0 feet, water overtops low-lying banks at RiverIsle upstream from Momence.* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...- At 7:00 AM CST Monday the stage was 3.5 feet and is beingaffected by a ice.- Forecast...During past ice jams in this area with similarweather and river conditions, the river crested near floodstage.- Flood stage is 5.0 feet.- http://www.weather.gov/safety/floodAn ice jam is affecting water levels in this area. River forecastsduring ice jams are less certain due to many complicated factors.Significant river ice cover can cause large water level fluctuationsand flooding with little advanced notice.
