Hydrologic Outlook issued January 20 at 11:54AM CST by NWS Chicago ILESFLOTFavorable conditions for river ice development and possible ice jamsare expected through Wednesday morning, impacting theRock, Fox, Des Plaines, and Kankakee river basins.Bitterly cold temperatures will persist through Wednesday morning.This will make conditions favorable for the rapid formation of riverice on area rivers and tributaries. River ice spotters and rivergauge data indicate that most area rivers already have some areas ofheavy river ice including a few minor ice jams. New ice jams will bepossible along the Rock, Fox, Des Plaines, and Kankakee rivers,including their tributaries. Any ice jam that develops will have thepotential to cause rises on area rivers with little warning andisolated areas of flooding are possible.This outlook means that elevated water levels and potential impactsare possible, but not yet certain. Persons along area rivers shouldcontinue to monitor the latest forecasts into next week.This product may be updated by Tuesday afternoon.

Extreme Cold Warning issued January 21 at 2:59AM CST until January 21 at 12:00PM CST by NWS Chicago IL* WHAT...Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 32 below.* WHERE...Boone, De Kalb, La Salle, Lee, Ogle, Winnebago, Lake IL,and McHenry Counties.* WHEN...Until noon CST today.* IMPACTS...The dangerously cold wind chills around 30 below zerocould cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin isexposed to these temperatures.* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Wind chills will rise above 30 below by 11 AMto noon, but likely will not rise above 20 below until 2 to 3 PM.Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you mustgo outside.
