Hydrologic Outlook issued January 17 at 11:23AM CST by NWS Chicago ILESFLOTFavorable conditions for river ice development and possible ice jamsare expected from Saturday through at early next week, impacting theRock, Fox, Des Plaines, and Kankakee river basins.Bitterly cold temperatures will return to the region Saturday intoSaturday night and persist through early next week. This will makeconditions favorable for the rapid formation of river ice on arearivers and tributaries. River ice spotters and river gauge dataindicate that most area rivers already have some areas of heavyriver ice including a few minor ice jams. New ice jams will bepossible along the Rock, Fox, Des Plaines, and Kankakee rivers,including their tributaries. Any ice jam that develops will have thepotential to cause rises on area rivers with little warning andisolated areas of flooding are possible.This outlook means that elevated water levels and potential impactsare possible, but not yet certain. Persons along area rivers shouldcontinue to monitor the latest forecastsinto next week.This product will be updated by tomorrow afternoon.
