HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is developing across the Moreton Bay islands, Gold Coast and Scenic Rim during Friday, forecast to become more widespread over central parts of the Southeast Coast district, including Brisbane, Ipswich, and Caboolture into Saturday. 6-hourly rainfall totals between 70 and 130 mm are likely today, increasing to between 100 and 130 mm through Saturday, with possible isolated 6-hourly totals of between 170 mm and 200 mm about terrain. 24-hourly totals of between 200 and 250 mm are likely. Locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING may develop late this evening and continue into Saturday near and south of the system centre, and in bands of showers and thunderstorms wrapping around the system. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 200 and 250 mm and 24-hourly totals between 350 and 450 mm are possible. All rainfall numbers are dependent on the movement and position of the system. DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 65 km/h with peak gusts to 120 km/h to continue this afternoon over the island communities, and developing through Friday over the southeast Queensland coast and Scenic Rim. This risk will then extend more broadly across the warning area through Friday night and into Saturday, especially within showers and thunderstorms. DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS of up to 155 km/h associated with Tropical Cyclone Alfred may develop about coastal, island and elevated locations near and to the south of the system centre from Friday evening into Saturday morning. Locally DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS are also possible in showers and thunderstorms along the coastal fringe between the Sunshine Coast and Coolangatta, and in areas near and south of Alfred s centre. VERY HEAVY SURF which may lead to localised damage and severe coastal erosion is occurring between Cape Moreton and Coolangatta. These very large and powerful waves are expected to persist today and Saturday as Alfred moves closer to the coast, with the largest waves expected along the Gold Coast. Damaging surf conditions may also redevelop along remaining coasts south of Noosa Heads late Saturday afternoon or evening after Tropical Cyclone Alfred has moved further inland and the wave direction turns northeasterly. Damaging surf conditions are expected to ease by early Sunday. Beach conditions in these areas are VERY DANGEROUS and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas. Abnormally High Tides are also possible on the overnight high tide tonight into early Saturday morning. Water levels may exceed the highest tide of the year by up to around half a metre between Noosa Heads and Coolangatta, including parts of the Moreton Bay coast, with the highest levels likely to be along the Gold Coast. This could lead to minor flooding of the foreshore and coastal erosion. A Tropical Cyclone Advice and Forecast Track Map are current for Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Significant wave heights greater than 5 metres are being observed at the Tweed offshore wave buoy, and greater than 4 metres at the Tweed Heads wave buoy. The largest significant wave height recorded was 7.9 metres at the Tweed Offshore wave buoy early this morning.
