Water levels may exceed the highest tide of the year by around half a metre on the overnight high tide tonight and overnight Thursday into early Friday morning between Tweed Heads and Smokey Cape and by less than half a metre between Smokey Cape and Seal Rocks. This may lead to flooding of the foreshore and coastal erosion. There is a possibility that DANGEROUSLY HIGH TIDES could cause further coastal erosion and some inundation of low-lying areas near exposed beaches on the Tweed Coast including to the NSW/Qld border overnight Thursday into early Friday morning. This is dependent on how Alfred behaves as it approaches the coast. VERY HEAVY SURF which may lead to localised damage and severe coastal erosion is also occurring between Tweed Heads and Seal Rocks today. This is expected to continue tonight and Thursday. These very large and powerful waves are likely to continue increasing during Thursday afternoon and evening as Alfred moves closer to the coast, with the largest waves expected north of Coffs Harbour. Beach conditions in these areas are VERY DANGEROUS and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas. A Tropical Cyclone Advice and Forecast Track Map is current for Tropical Cyclone Alfred. A Severe Weather Warning is current for Northern Rivers, Northern Tablelands and Mid North Coast Districts. A separate Hazardous Surf Warning is also current. A Flood Watch is current for the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast Districts. For all of the latest warnings, please refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings/. Locations which may be affected include Tweed Heads, Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay, Ballina, Yamba, Port Macquarie, Woolgoolga and Brooms Head. Significant wave heights greater than 6 metres are being observed at the Tweed offshore wave buoy, and greater than 5 metres at the Crowdy Head and Coffs Harbour wave buoys. The largest significant wave height recorded so far is 7.72 metres at the Tweed Offshore wave buoy.Coastal Hazard Warningfor ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES and DAMAGING SURFIssued at 4:38 am Thursday, 6 March 2025.The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water. * Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.The next Coastal Hazard Warning will be issued by 11:00 am AEDT Thursday.Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210.
