blizzard warning in effectBlizzard conditions with poor visibility in snow and blowing snow are expected or occurring.Snow will begin Thursday night as a low pressure system approaches the region from the west. With the passage of the associated cold front, temperatures across the southern Kivalliq will rapidly cool and gusty northerly winds will develop. This combination, along with the freshly fallen snow will aid in the development of blizzard conditions come Friday.This will first occur at Baker Lake, where blizzard conditions behind the cold front will begin Friday morning. Gusts up to 80 km/h will persist during the day and continue Friday night, before diminishing to light Saturday morning. Over in Rankin Inlet, Whale Cove and Arviat, near-blizzard conditions will begin during the late morning or early afternoon hours Friday as gusts increase to 60 to 70 km/h. Blizzard conditions will begin in earnest Friday evening as the northerly gusts increase to 70 km/h, or stronger. Conditions will improve as winds abate to 30 gusting 50 km/h Saturday morning.###Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.Blizzard warnings are issued when widespread reduced visibilities of 400 metres or less are expected for at least 6 hours.Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
